Pin and Pinless Moisture Measurement

The MR265 also offers flexibility in identifying moisture issues—providing both pin and pinless capabilities.

The pinless option can provide qualitative measurements through an integrated sensor for situations where a more invasive method either isn’t possible or would cause unwanted damage.

Conversely, pin measurements produce quantifiable measurements using a resistive sensor that can pierce cavities and other suspected moisture spots within walls, ceilings, and floors.

When used with the thermal imager, operators can scan an entire interior wall to narrow down the moisture location, use the integrated sensor to pinpoint the source of water intrusion, and then measure the exact amount of moisture without requiring unnecessary demolition.

Functionality can be further expanded through six compatible accessory probes and sensors available for the MR265, such as the FLIR MR08 hammer and wall cavity probe combo and the FLIR MR05 impact pin moisture probe.

The FLIR MR277 combines the advantages of a high-resolution infrared imaging sensor, FLIR MSX® image technology and a laser pointer, in a all-in-one building inspection system that helps you quickly locate, clearly identify, and easily document critical moisture and building envelope issues.

Designed for restoration, remediation, and building management professionals, the enhanced FLIR MR277 includes features needed to identify, diagnose, fix, and document moisture and building envelope problems. The FLIR Lepton® thermal imaging sensor powers IGM, visually guiding users straight to the source of building-related issues. Once a problem is located, the built-in pinless sensor enables quick, non-invasive moisture detection. Inspectors can then streamline diagnosis and documentation by using the built-in Bluetooth® to connect via METERLiNK® to mobile devices running the FLIR Tools® mobile app. This allows users to upload measurements and images from the job site to easily complete and share full reports with their customers.

FLIR MR277 KEY FEATURES

• Scan large areas for moisture, air leaks, and more with the 160 × 120 thermal camera
• Easily identify both the context and the issue; MSX embosses physical details on thermal images for clear interpretation
• Pinpoint the exact location of problems with the integrated laser
• Scan for moisture with the integrated non-invasive pinless sensor
• Capture exact measurements with an external pin probe (included) and wide range of optional moisture probes
• Simplify documenting issues with the integrated digital camera
• Create a single file documenting thermal, visual, MSX, hygrometer readings, and laser location
• Download images and data via USB cable or upload via Bluetooth® to the FLIR Tools® App

The MR277 features a vibrant display screen that is 50 percent larger than previous FLIR moisture meter models, making it easier to identify problem areas visually and allowing users to view multiple parameters simultaneously, including humidity levels, dew point, and vapor pressure.

A dual-camera system powers FLIR MSX, which adds visual details such as edges, writing, and patterns to full thermal images. The MR277 can display and record MSX, thermal, and visual images, with storage for up to 15,000 images in the internal memory.

The MR277 includes an MR02 removeable pin probe in addition to the built-in pinless sensor to allow users to verify the presence of moisture and take accurate, pin-based measurements with a single tool.

The MR13 moisture hygrometer is also included; this humidity and temperature sensor measures relative humidity and is field-replaceable, thereby minimizing downtime to help keep professionals on-site to quickly complete the job.

Extech MO220 Wood Moisture Detector

The Extech MO220 Wood Moisture Detector monitors the moisture in various wood types (6 to 44 percent) and building materials. It measures directly with the integral pin electrodes or you can use the heavy-duty remote hand-press probe on hard surfaces.

Additional Features

The memory on the MO220 contains eight wood groups with calibrations for approximately 170 species of wood, and the meter can display automatic temperature-compensated readings when the included temperature probe is used. There is a built-in calibration check, replaceable measurement electrode pins, Auto Power Off function with disable feature, and low battery indicator.

The moisture meter also comes with a temperature probe, which enables temperature measurements or materials and surrounding area and also enhances the accuracy of measurements. It does so, by adding ATC, automatic temperature compensation, so can take into account any surrounding temperatures, which may affect the accuracy of measurement taking and so will adjust readings accordingly.

The moisture meter has eight wood calibration scales stored in its memory; these scales enable users of the meter to get extremely precise readings of the levels of moisture in approximately 170 different species of wood. This results in the meter being an extremely useful piece of kit to have when needing to measure the moisture levels in wood burners or wood burning stoves.

The meter’s integrated pin electrodes are replaceable should the initial pair become defective and the remote hand-press probe is included in the package, as is a protective cap, two AAA batteries and a pouch to keep the meter safe in. The MO220 meter also comes with an auto power off function, which can be set to between 1 to 9 minutes and helps to ensure long battery life. This function can, however, be disabled depending on the preferences of the user.

The moisture meter itself is housed in a double molded casing, which helps to ensure its sturdiness and at 180 x 50 x 31 mm, it is small enough to fit inside a pocket, as well as operated with only one hand.

Extech MO280 Theory of Operation

The square sensor on the rear of the instrument sends and receives a low power electromagnetic signal through the material under test. The LCD shows the average relative moisture content (in %) of the material under test to a max. depth of 20mm. Moisture that is closer to the surface of the material under test has a greater effect on the average than moisture deeper in the material. The MO280 is an auto-calibration device; no user calibration is needed

The thickness of the sample under test must be at least 3/4” (20mm). If the sample is thinner, use a stack of samples to measure. Also, the measurement area of the sample should be larger than the MO280 sensor area which is 1.6 x 1.6” (40 x 40mm).

FLIR MR77 Pinless Moisture Meter

The new FLIR MR77 is a durable, all-in-one moisture meter that has the flexibility of both a pin-less sensor and a wired pin probe. The MR77 gives you the ability to take moisture readings as deep as 0.75-inch underneath the surface of a range of wood species and building materials. The meter is accurate, reliable and it’s also tested to survive a 2 meter drop. The FLIR MR77 moisture meter exceeds expectations by delivering advanced measurements that disaster restoration and water damage professionals need on the job-site. The meter has a rugged design that doesn’t break your stride: easy to swap temperature and humidity sensors (field replaceable) are engineered to reduce downtime so you don’t fall behind on your schedule.

The MR77 offers comprehensive capabilities for moisture-related repairs and inspections. In addition to a non-invasive, ‘pin-less’ moisture measurement system for damage-free testing, the MR77 also includes a remote pin-type probe with 30” cable for contact moisture readings when necessary. The jumbo LCD display is backlit by a bright white LED. It is easy to read, displaying moisture, humidity and air temperature levels. It also includes a bargraph for at-a-glance analogue style measurements as you scan walls, ceilings, floors and other building material surfaces for changes in moisture.

The FLIR MR77 represents the next generation of disaster-restoration testing equipment. The meter works with FLIR Tools Mobile app to connect it to your compatible smartphone and tablet via Bluetooth. METERLiNK technology also wirelessly embeds moisture readings right on the image of your FLIR Thermal Camera. These mobile tools enable technicians and site managers to datalog, share findings with colleagues, and easily create reports. The MR77 is so much more than a water-damage restoration contractor’s moisture meter. The FLIR moisture meter eliminates toolbox clutter by providing the added functionality of several additional meters built right in, adding one-meter convenience and tremendous value to your purchase investment. In addition to moisture sensors and useful high/low alarms, the meter also measures temperature, relative humidity and a number of other valuable diagnostic metrics giving you incredible insight into site conditions and necessary repairs.

The MR77 incorporates a laser-spot IR (infrared) thermometer (with an easy-to-aim laser indicator) to help take rapid point-and-shoot spot temperatures of surfaces under restoration. The IR thermometer measures a 1 inch spot from 8 inches away. The IR thermometer also plays a role in monitoring for condensation hazards by factoring surface temperatures and dew point. Hygrometer / Psychrometer: Very few moisture meters also double as a hygrometer. The durable, do-it-all MR77 measures ambient temperature to help you quickly check job site temperatures without an additional thermometer. It also provides relative humidity readings and calculates dew point and mixing ratios. The MR77 is invaluable for calculating vapor pressure (kPA) as well as water vapor in Grains per Pound and Grains per Kilogram.

How to use Reed R6010 Moisture Measuring Meter

Taking a wood moisture measurement
Turn the meter ON by pressing the ON/OFF button. Try to keep the instrument in a upright position so the ball sensor is in the air and at least 8-10cm away from any object. Press the MEAS button and “CAL” will display on the LCD screen. To be able to take accurate measurements, the value of readings must be below 0.5. If the reading is above 0.5 you must turn the meter off and move to a dry area to calibrate. After the meter is calibrated it will automatically start to take measurements. To hold the current measurement press the MEAS button and the data hold symbol will appear on the LCD screen. After 30 seconds of inactivity the meter will auto power off.

Alarm Set Mode
Calibrate the moisture meter by moving it into the dry area at least 10 cm from any object that can affect the procedure. Press the MEAS button to put the meter in data hold and press the SET button. The RISK symbol will appear on the LCD screen and the value which the RISK alarm is set to. Now you can change this to the desired value by pressing the UP and DOWN buttons. Save your settings by pressing the SET button. Now change the WET alarm value by pressing the UP or DOWN buttons. Press the SET button to save the WET alarm value and to return to data hold mode. If the moisture measurement exceeds the RISK alarm setting the meter will beep every second. If the moisture measurement exceeds the WET alarm setting the meter will beep every half second.
