REED R9700 Calibration

1. Open the cover plate and place 2-3 drops of distilled water onto the prism surface, close the cover plate, press lightly and ensure the water spreads evenly across the whole surface area without air bubbles or dry sections. (wait 30 seconds until the water adjusts to ambient temperature)

2. Hold towards light source and look into the eyepiece, if the boundary line between the upper blue field and the lower white field is not located exactly on the 0°C waterline, adjust the correcting screw until both lines meet.

3. Wipe the water from the prism with clean dry cloth and replace the rubber correcting screw cover.

NOTE: under normal operating conditions the calibration only needs to be checked periodically.

Warning

1. DO NOT IMMERSE IN OR CLEAN WITH RUNNING WATER

2. THIS TOOL IS A PRECISON OPTICAL INSTRUMENT, IT REQUIRES CAREFULL HANDLING and STORAGE

3. DO NOT DROP OR SUBJECT TO SHOCK AS DAMAGE MAY RESULT TO THE MIRROR TUBE and OPTICAL COMPONENTS

4. DO NOT SCRATCH OR ATTEMPT TO MEASURE CORROSIVE CHEMICALS AS DAMAGE MAY OCCUR TO THE PRISM’S COATING

CAUTION – use extreme care when opening the radiator cap – do not remove while engine is running or the engine is warm. Do not let battery fluid come in contact with skin or eyes – personal injury may result

NOTE: under normal operating conditions the calibration only needs to be checked periodically

Maintenance

1. If the ambient temperature is not within the automatic temperature compensation range (10 – 30°C) the instrument must be calibrated before testing commences.

2. The prism must be cleaned thoroughly with a soft, clean damp cloth after each use – failure to do so will result in inaccurate readings & possible long term damage

3. The instrument must be kept in a dry clean environment to prevent condensation forming on the optical components

4. If used in accordance with the instructions & all warning are followed – the optical performance will remain constant & the instrument will give many years of reliable service.

The Reed MT-090 Features:

Brix% is calibrated to the number of grams of cane sugar contained in 100g of cane sugar solution

When measuring a sugar solution, the Brix% should perfectly match the actual concentration

With solutions of other components, a conversion chart is required

Features automatic temperature compensation

BRIX measurement is a well known application in the food and beverage industry. Strictly speaking the BRIX measurement is the determination of pure sucrose content in water (1 degree Brix = 1g of sucrose in 100g of solution), but the BRIX measurement is used in many other applications (soft drinks, fruit juices, tomato concentrates, etc..) which are very often far away from pure sucrose/water solutions. This has been leading to some confusions, especially when comparing results obtained with different measuring techniques (hydrometer, pycnometer, refractometer, digital density meter).

Different sample types

When measuring samples other than pure sucrose content in water different results will be obtained when using different techniques (hydrometer, pycnometer, refractometer, digital density meter).

Brix measurement

BRIX measurement can be done by refractive index as well as by density. When measuring pure sucrose content in water, both techniques will give the same result. Density and refractive index are strongly temperature dependent, but as this dependency is controlled in the corresponding instrument. Two types of instruments can be used, portable or benchtop instruments. The benchtop instruments offer built-in temperature control (Peltier) and higher accuracy than portable instruments.

Brix is a scale based on the amount that light bends when it passes through a liquid. If one were to place one’s hand in a pond and measure the amount it appeared to bend, and then place it in the ocean, it would appear to bend a different amount. That differential light bending is the best tool currently available to consumers to determine the value of crops that are purchased or produced. The Bric Chart is the scale that anyone can use to determine poor, average, good or excellent in a foodstuff.

Wikipedia Definition

A stroboscope also known as a strobe, is an instrument used to make a cyclically moving object appear to be slow-moving, or stationary. It consists of either a rotating disk with slots or holes or a lamp such as a flashtube which produces brief repetitive flashes of light. Usually the rate of the stroboscope is adjustable to different frequencies. When a rotating or vibrating object is observed with the stroboscope at its vibration frequency (or a submultiple of it), it appears stationary. Thus stroboscopes are also used to measure frequency.

For difficult access, nothing beats the REED DT-1236L laser tachometer. This unit also measures linear speeds & contact RPM measurement. The non contact measurement can be made with reflective tape on the shaft, or white paint for close range. Contact measurements use a rubber cone (shaft centre drilling) or rubber rimmed wheels for linear speed. These components are replaceable separately. For fixed installations Lutron makes a panel mount 48×96 digital indicator for inductive or optical pickups.

Reflective Marking Tape To use this, simply cut the adhesive tape provided into approximately 12mm ( 0.5″) squares, peel off the backing and apply one square to each rotation shaft. The non-reflective area must always be greater than the reflective area. If the shaft is normally reflective, it must be covered with black tape or black paint before attaching the reflective tape. The shaft surface must be clean and smooth before applying the reflective tape.

Very Low RPM Measurements

When measuring very low RPM values, it is recommended to attach more reflective tape and take several readings. Divide up all the readings taken to come up with an average RPM measurement.

Using the Max and Min function
While taking a measurement, by pressing the “MAX/MIN” button once you will activate the Max function. The meter will display the MAX (maximum) reading. Press the button again to display the MIN (minimum) reading. A third press will exit MAX/MIN mode. The Reed R5003 datalogger will automatically exit MAX/MIN mode in 10 seconds if no button is pressed.

Auto Power Off
After 5 mins of inactivity, Reed R5003 will automatically shut off. With the “Recording” function active the Auto Power Off funtion is disable.

How to record data using “Recording” function
Firstly you have to setup the record mode according with the datalogging software. Pressing the “START/STOP” button for more than 4 seconds will switch the instrument into the record mode and the values will be recorded. The REC icon will display in that confirm the meter recording measurements data. To stop recording press the same button again for more than 4 seconds. The data recording will stop when the memory is full.
